This is Peter(NOT HIS REAL NAME), a slave from Mississippi, 1863. The scars are a result of a whipping by his overseer, who was subsequently discharged. It took two months to recover from the beating. The pattern of scarring seen here is highly suggestive of keloid formation. Scars of a whipped Mississippi slave, photo taken (April 2, 1863, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA. Original caption: “Overseer Artayou Carrier whipped me. I was two months in bed sore from the whipping. My master come after I was whipped”.
